My first
experience with windsurfing was in the late seventies in Long
Island Sound where we sailed catamarans off the Connecticut
coast.
 |
There were a few board sailors and I
practiced falling off a few times,
but only really learned that if you
wear glasses you will loose them to
the depths.
The next encounter was in the early
nineties at the Lagoa de Obidos
where I learned that being able to
sail and being able to windsurf were
only distantly related skills.
Climbing back on the board and
raising the sail was hard work.
Fortunately I discovered SuperWind
on top of one of the hills of Oeiras
with its soccer pitch sized pond
that was a meter deep - most
convenient for climbing back aboard
but also deep enough for
water-starts and the limited size
made you practice your tacks and
jibes.
With a range of board and sail sizes
to choose from to adjust to your
current balance and skill levels you
got to practice on the areas that
needed improving and the instructors
could offer advice from the edge of
the pool or push off from the ramp
to give you a demonstration.

When
you had the basics mastered you could extend the
process with group classes in more challenging
environments on the beaches of Oeiras, Caparica or
Guincho or perhaps venture further afield to Tarifa
or Cabo Verde.
